Charles Leclerc expresses doubts about Fernando Alonso’s continued presence in F1, questioning the opportunity costs for younger drivers as Alonso signs a new contract to race beyond his 43rd birthday.

Charles Leclerc is quite ambivalent about Fernando Alonso’s decision to continue racing in Formula 1 despite being almost 43 years old.

The Monegasque believes that he is inevitably taking a seat from a young driver waiting for their chance.

However, the decision of the Aston Martin driver to continue has the full support of his longtime confidant and team ambassador, Pedro de la Rosa.

“I am very happy about Alonso’s contract renewal. It’s great for Formula 1. Let’s not forget that Fernando was considering retirement.”

Alonso’s new contract will likely see him continue racing not only in 2025 but also in 2026.

“Aston Martin is committing to a driver who is (nearly) 43 years old. Because they don’t care about age, just performance. I think he will still be competing at 45. That’s the level of commitment and experience of Fangio.”

26-year-old Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc also enjoys a new and extended contract. But he stated that he would almost certainly not still be in Formula 1 at Alonso’s age.

“Fernando is one of the most talented drivers on the grid and he deserves his place in Formula 1. But there are so many young drivers who also deserve a spot. It’s not easy to find the balance.”

“Very likely, I won’t be here at 43, even though I would like to be. Why? Because I want to try other categories, including definitely Le Mans.”
