Charles Leclerc praises Ferrari’s tire management as the finest he’s experienced, marking a pivotal improvement for the team’s Formula 1 race strategy.
After moving from eighth to fourth place at the Japanese Grand Prix, Leclerc asserts that this now-crucial aspect of Formula 1 race pace has never been better since he joined the team in 2019.
“Since I’ve been with Ferrari, we’ve tended to be very fast in qualifying and struggle with tire management in the race.”
“This is by far the most positive start to the year I’ve seen in terms of tire management and also, simply, in terms of how easy our car is to drive.”
“It’s not as if we, the drivers, are doing something drastically different from what we’ve done in the past. It’s just a F1 car that’s in a better position and manages the tires better. So, it’s a good sign and encouraging for the rest of the season.”
Leclerc had moved up to third in the last stages of the race until he was overtaken by his teammate, Carlos Sainz. Could he not have pushed more on his tires? He says he couldn’t have kept his teammate behind.
“Honestly, I don’t think we expected to have both cars in the same place at the same time. We had different strategies, and Carlos was much faster on fresher tires. It was pointless for me to fight… We’re managing the tires better, yes, but they’re not indestructible either. It’s a fine line.”
