Charles Leclerc reveals Ferrari’s understanding of their disappointing qualifying at Imola, identifying areas for improvement to enhance future performance.
Charles Leclerc discussed his mistake during the race with Canal+ after the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver went off at the Variante Alta, explaining that he pushed harder to try to catch Lando Norris, but to no avail.
“It was completely intentional! It’s just a mistake, I tried to push a bit more because I saw that as soon as we got closer, we lost a lot in the corners. But it’s a track where it’s difficult to overtake, I took a bit more risk, locked the front, and decided to go straight,” noted Leclerc.
“After that, Lando saw that I was close, he increased his pace, and we maintained ours, we had the same pace throughout the race. We simply didn’t have Lando’s performance, we were similar to Max’s pace in the second stint, but the McLarens were impressive.”
Leclerc reveals that yesterday’s disappointing qualifying was understood by looking at the telemetry, as he was losing three-tenths even before the first corner compared to Norris and Max Verstappen. According to him, Ferrari can learn from this for the future.
“I think there are quite a few positives, more than we saw today. Yesterday, I was rather disappointed, but looking at the data, we understood some things. I was losing three-tenths in the first three corners, well, I thought it was in the first corners, but it’s before Turn 1.”
“I think Red Bull and McLaren are doing something with their engine strategy at the start of the lap, and we need to learn from that. Because from Turn 2 to the finish line, we are the fastest car on the track. And if we start ahead, the race is easier. Today, we missed the starting position, which wasn’t right.”
