Charles Leclerc aims to overcome recent qualification woes with two chances at the sprint-formatted Chinese Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc insisted that he had “two chances” at the upcoming Chinese Grand Prix next weekend to make up for his recent struggles in qualifications, which he is not accustomed to.
The Monegasque is known for his exceptional pace over a single lap but has failed to shine in recent events.
Leclerc could only secure 8th place on the grid last weekend at the Japanese Grand Prix, which reduced his chances of reaching the podium.
With the first race in China since 2019 being a sprint weekend, the Ferrari driver will have two attempts to prove he still has his good one-lap pace.
“It’s going to be an interesting weekend,” said Leclerc.
“As always, I think the sprint weekend is quite tricky and there’s no room for error. But I like it.”
“It’s even more of a challenge because qualifying is now an area where I need to focus on getting the tires into the right window. So, I’ll have two qualifying sessions in Shanghai, two chances to shine.”
Could he take both poles? The Monegasque isn’t committing too much…
“I don’t know, I think the situation will be relatively similar to what it is, with Red Bull still having a bit of an edge.”
“We are the second-best team after the others, but McLaren isn’t bad over a lap, they were really good at Suzuka and were very close to us in the race, so they are not so far off.”
“We’ll have to see the graining and the tires, it’s been 5 years since we raced there, it will be a real unknown with definitely some setup choices to make after Free Practice that we’ll have to then commit to.”
