Despite a sixth-place finish in qualifying, Charles Leclerc remains optimistic about the SF-24’s performance in the upcoming Shanghai race.
Charles Leclerc qualified sixth for the Chinese Grand Prix, after a qualifying session dominated by Red Bull, as well as McLaren and Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin. However, he expects improvements in tomorrow’s race.
“Honestly, it was very challenging to get everything right. The car was inconsistent, the wind changed between Q2 and Q3, and we struggled a bit more,” noted Leclerc. “That’s where I’m somewhat more confident, especially on my side, we had a car today that was more focused on the race than on qualifying.”
“We knew qualifying wouldn’t be optimal, so for tomorrow I think we’re in a good position. But it’s a pity because there are four cars within a tenth and a half, but we have a good car for the race tomorrow and tire management was very good this morning, so that gives me confidence for tomorrow.”
Carlos Sainz hit the wall in Q2, causing a red flag, but the Spaniard managed to return to the garage, where his team repaired his car. He placed seventh on the grid, just behind his teammate.
“It’s not ideal to have an accident in Q2. But I managed to crash at the best angle by turning the steering wheel at the right moment, to avoid damage to the rear wing and suspension,” Sainz stated.
“From there, I recovered well, I still had the confidence to push hard. But it wasn’t an ideal qualifying even though I managed to do some good laps. It’s not a good circuit for us but I think we can make up ground in the race.”
