Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris say endurance racing can wait, as their full energy remains devoted to Formula 1 success today.
McLaren recently confirmed it will return to endurance racing in 2027, stepping into the top-tier Hypercar category. While the Woking-based team hasn’t shared many details yet, the announcement signals a serious commitment to competing at the highest level in events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
A year ago, when the project was still in its early stages, McLaren CEO Zak Brown was already dreaming big.
“We’re very open-minded. Who wouldn’t want to win Le Mans? I’ve talked to Lando and Oscar — they told me they’d love to race there one day. That’s pretty exciting, isn’t it?” he said back then.
But as things stand today, both of McLaren’s F1 drivers are focused on one goal: success in Formula 1.
“It’s not something I’m thinking about right now,” said Lando Norris when asked about the potential crossover. “2027 is still a long way off, but a Formula 1 season already takes so much out of you.”
Oscar Piastri shares the same view. “One day, maybe — but not anytime soon. I’m really happy in F1 for the moment,” he said.
Could either of them take on Le Mans while still racing in Formula 1?
“I don’t think so,” Piastri replied. “You can’t really do both justice. In F1, maybe it’s not the end of the world, but Le Mans deserves proper preparation and commitment. You can’t just show up.”
“For now, I’ll stay focused on F1. And when the time comes, maybe I’ll ask Zak if I can give Le Mans a go.”
