Lawson’s Verstappen-Like Style Set to Boost Red Bull

Horner: “Lawson Drives Like Verstappen, It’s a Big Advantage”

Liam Lawson’s Verstappen-like driving style could become Red Bull’s secret weapon as they aim to reclaim F1 dominance this season.

This year should go more smoothly in terms of setup work in the Red Bull Racing garage.

That’s the prediction of team principal Christian Horner, who believes there is a “striking similarity” between the driving styles of Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson.

This will be crucial in the team’s pursuit of reclaiming the F1 Constructors’ title this year.

The New Zealander was chosen over Yuki Tsunoda after Red Bull decided to cut ties with Sergio Perez following a disastrous season last year.

Christian Horner and advisor Helmut Marko determined, after analyzing data from both Lawson and Tsunoda, that the New Zealander was the better candidate.

“Just like Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon before him, who both got a shot at Red Bull before being dropped, the opportunity for Liam may have come too early. We are aware of the risk of history repeating itself,” admits Horner.

“But Liam has a different character, a different personality to handle that pressure.”

“He has shown real resilience and strength of character with the opportunity he was given to step up, take his chance, and deliver what was expected of him—and he did.”

“The initial plan wasn’t to fast-track things for this year. The circumstances were dictated by Checo, unfortunately, not having a strong season.”

“But we believe that with the trajectory Liam is on, he will only get better.”

“What convinced us is that he drives the car in the same way as Max. There’s a striking similarity.”

“He’s not hesitant to have a very responsive front end in the car, so in terms of driving characteristics, it will be easier for both our F1 cars to operate more closely within the same setup ranges.”
