Liam Lawson struggled with his sudden demotion from Red Bull but has quickly regained his confidence, says Racing Bulls’ CEO, Peter Bayer.
Liam Lawson struggled to come to terms with Red Bull’s decision to send him back to Racing Bulls after just two races, according to Racing Bulls CEO Peter Bayer.
Red Bull demoted Lawson to Racing Bulls, the team he had driven for at the end of last season, before the Japanese Grand Prix. Despite his efforts, Lawson failed to make it past Q1 and didn’t score any points in the two races he competed in. He also faced significant challenges with the car’s handling during his last appearance in Shanghai.
A week later, Red Bull announced that Lawson would return to Racing Bulls.
“It took him some time to digest the news,” Bayer admitted in Jeddah.
“When I first saw him in Italy, he seemed a bit down. Honestly, that’s how I saw him when he arrived. He was somewhat confused by everything that had happened… and so quickly.”
However, Lawson quickly settled back into his old team.
“He knew everyone, all the tools, all the setups, and I could really feel him finding his rhythm again. He’s an excellent driver, full of humor, and we’re seeing that again.”
While Lawson has yet to score points this season, the team was encouraged by his performance in the most recent race.
“He showed good pace last week in Bahrain. In Q1, I think he was posting sector times close to those of Isack in sectors one and three, so we’re confident about the rest of the season.”
How does Bayer assess the start of the season for his team? And what does he think of Hadjar?
“We’ve had our ups and downs. Sometimes we had points on the board, and maybe we took a few too many risks with strategy. But at the same time, we’re pleased with Isack’s development. He’s a young driver who hasn’t had much F1 experience after his time in F2. He’s shown massive potential both on and off the track. We’re very happy with his progress.”
