Lawson Faces Austin Debut With Penalty and Sprint Test

16/10/2024

Liam Lawson prepares for his Austin debut, facing a grid penalty and a challenging Sprint weekend at the US Grand Prix.

Liam Lawson will make his official debut as a full-time driver this weekend at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. The RB F1 driver will experience the Circuit of the Americas for the first time and will have a penalty, with the added challenge of a Sprint weekend complicating matters.

“COTA is an incredible track, and I’m really looking forward to driving there for the first time,” Lawson said. “I’m very excited about heading to Austin and getting behind the wheel of the RB VCARB 01 for the first time. I’ve been to COTA several times as a reserve driver, and it’s probably one of my favorite races—the atmosphere is amazing.”

“Although I haven’t raced on this track yet, I’ve spent a lot of time on the simulator. I can’t wait to actually drive it, and overall, I’m thrilled to be back in competition, working with the team to achieve the best possible results.”

Yuki Tsunoda is also hoping to take advantage of his fondness for the circuit to deliver a strong result: “Austin is one of my favorite weekends of the year because I love the city, and the track is great fun to drive, especially the first section, which reminds me a bit of Suzuka.”

“I’ve finished in the points the last three times and even set the fastest lap of the race last year. I’m curious to see how the track feels after the resurfacing since the last race.”

“It’s a Sprint weekend, which means the preparation and simulator work we’ve done before coming to Austin are even more crucial than usual, to make sure we have a smooth free practice session before diving straight into the competitive part of the weekend.”

Alan Permane, the team’s sporting director, outlines the various stakes and challenges for this weekend: “We’re heading to the Circuit of the Americas for the first event of a triple header. It’s a race highly appreciated by both drivers and teams, with a fantastic atmosphere at the circuit and in the city of Austin.”

“The track presents numerous challenges, from high-speed corners with quick direction changes to heavy braking zones and long, flat-out corners. Historically, it’s been quite bumpy, but it has undergone significant resurfacing for 2024.”

“This could introduce a new element to the weekend, both in terms of car setup and potentially race strategy, as it’s traditionally been a two-stop race. This weekend, we’ll once again have Liam Lawson in the cockpit.”

“It’s a Sprint weekend, so there’s only one hour of practice before the competitive sessions begin. Liam has spent extensive time in the simulator to familiarize himself with the track and fine-tune the setup, and he’s as well-prepared as possible for the challenge ahead.”
