Marko Confirms: Lawson Secured for F1 Grid 2024

02/07/2024

Red Bull’s Helmut Marko confirms Liam Lawson will join the F1 grid next year, standing firm on the decision.

Liam Lawson will indeed be on the Formula 1 starting grid next year, insists Dr. Helmut Marko, Red Bull’s F1 consultant, in response to statements from Christian Horner and Peter Bayer.

Marko had already hinted in the days leading up to the recent Austrian GP that Daniel Ricciardo would be sidelined from the RB F1 junior team to make way for Lawson.

According to strong speculation, Lawson’s contract as a 22-year-old reserve driver with Red Bull guarantees him a cockpit by 2025—or he will be free to sign elsewhere, like with Audi-Sauber.

However, Christian Horner, the boss of Red Bull Racing, and Peter Bayer, CEO of RB F1, were not ready to confirm the news at the Red Bull Ring last weekend.

“Daniel is in the seat, and it’s up to him to make the most of it,” Horner stated.

And Bayer added, “We do our job to train young drivers, but the decision regarding the second seat will be made at our discretion, and we are not in a hurry.”

Amid the internal power struggle clearly still unfolding at Red Bull, it is believed that Horner wants to keep Ricciardo in his position for 2025—while Marko champions the young New Zealander. And the Austrian remains adamant against Horner and Bayer!

When asked about Lawson, Marko has now declared: “We are going to offer him something. A cockpit for next year. He will be on the F1 grid in 2025.”

“It is clear that the Racing Bulls are a junior team. This has been communicated internally, and everyone understands it.”
