Bayer Hails Lawson’s Stunning Debut, Targets Haas in Battle

24/10/2024

RB F1’s CEO Peter Bayer praises Lawson’s debut performance, expressing optimism for overtaking Haas in the championship battle.

Peter Bayer, CEO of RB F1, is pleased to see his team delivering strong performances and making steady progress. Despite Haas reclaiming sixth place in the championship and RB F1 no longer being the top team in the second half of the grid, he commends his team’s ability to find performance.

“I told Laurent [Mekies] on the pit wall that it’s true we’ve lost the lead, but we’ve still gained in performance,” Bayer remarked. “And I think the guys, Alan [Permane] and the team, have done a really, really good job in bringing this new floor.”

He was particularly impressed by what happened in qualifying with Liam, explaining that, without any pressure on Lawson’s car, the team experimented with the settings, which unlocked significant performance.

Bayer was effusive in his praise of Liam Lawson’s performance throughout his first weekend with RB F1: “It’s his first weekend in the car. And honestly, we thought with the penalty, third place in Q1 was a good result, and we should be happy with that.”

However, Lawson went on to impress during the race: “He obviously did a very good job in Turn 1, where there was a bit of commotion, and he kept his line clean. And then, honestly, he was flawless at the end.”

“He put in some very good laps, with strong pace. I think what worked in his favour was that the degradation was much stronger than we anticipated. Obviously, with the hard tyres, we expected to go long, but the way it played out was far better than we had calculated.”

“It was a great performance overall. In the end, he handled the situation very well. He also mentioned feeling very comfortable in the car. He was working with the switches much more than he normally would. Overall, it was a very, very impressive showing.”

Ahead of the 20th race of the season, Bayer is confident that RB can overtake Haas again: “We need to be cautious, but so far, we believe we’re ready to fight until the end. The straight is very long.”

“I also got the impression, during the debrief, that the guys had their smiles back, and so they’re feeling confident. Seeing that we have a car which, when everything works well and the driver can fully exploit it, can place third in Q1 gives me the confidence we need to battle with these teams.”
