Lawson: “I Want to Prove I Belong in F1”

03/04/2025

Liam Lawson, demoted from Red Bull Racing, is focused on proving his F1 worth with Racing Bulls as he eyes a strong comeback.

Racing Bulls driver Liam Lawson is determined to make a strong comeback after his recent demotion from Red Bull Racing.

The New Zealand driver, who lost his seat with Red Bull Racing in recent days, opened up about his shock and frustration yesterday and today in Suzuka. When facing the press, he tried to mask his disappointment while maintaining a professional attitude.

Lawson is focused on proving his worth in Formula 1, even though he admitted that this change came as a “complete surprise” following the Chinese Grand Prix last month. He added that the decision caught him off guard, especially so soon into the season.

“I had no idea in China,” he shared during today’s FIA press conference. “I guess it was decided on the Monday or Tuesday after the race. I left China to start preparations for Japan and then got the call saying this was going to happen. It was probably very unexpected, especially this early, but it came after the weekend.”

No Thoughts of Returning to Red Bull Racing Yet

Having started his first full season with Red Bull after just 11 Grand Prix appearances in the previous two years, Lawson is trying to remain positive despite the swift loss of his seat. He’s relieved to keep racing and is eager to prove himself in the cockpit.

“We know how F1 works and how quickly things change. A year ago, I didn’t have a seat. I was just there, watching, dreaming of racing. Then, I got the chance to race at the end of last year, and then the opportunity to join Red Bull Racing. A lot has happened in 12 months.”

For Lawson, the priority is simply being behind the wheel. He has a chance to prove he belongs in F1, and that’s his focus with every race.

“The key for me is being in the car. I have the chance to prove I belong here, and that’s what I’ll aim to do every time I get in the car, starting this weekend. Things move so fast in this sport, and as for my future, I’m not sure. The only thing I can control is driving fast.”

He acknowledged that a return to Red Bull may be part of future discussions, but for now, he’s not dwelling on it.

“Whatever happens next, I can’t really control that. What I can control is how I drive to prove myself. So, honestly, I’m not really thinking about it right now.”
