The Las Vegas Grand Prix highlighted record-breaking achievements in a 2024 Formula 1 season defined by diversity and competitive milestones.
As with every Grand Prix, it’s time to review the standout statistics, the records broken, the impressive streaks still ongoing, or those abruptly ended during the last weekend.
Qualifying
- George Russell secured his third pole position of the season, following Canada and Great Britain, and now Las Vegas. It also marks the fourth of his career.
- Carlos Sainz qualified second for the second consecutive year in Las Vegas. This is also the second time in the last three races he has started on the front row, following his pole and victory in Mexico.
- Pierre Gasly qualified third, improving on Esteban Ocon’s fourth place in Brazil. This is only the second time in his career he has qualified in the top three, the first being in Qatar in 2021. He also qualified fourth in Las Vegas last year.
- Charles Leclerc qualified fourth, a position from which he secured his last two F1 wins (Monza and Austin). Not this time, however.
- Starting sixth, Lando Norris has now started outside the top three only three times in the last 14 races, but he has never won from beyond fifth on the grid.
- For the fifth consecutive time, Lando Norris outqualified Oscar Piastri.
- Nico Hülkenberg achieved his 10th Q3 appearance of the season for Haas.
- Sergio Pérez was eliminated in Q1 for the sixth time this year—more than Max Verstappen’s total across his entire Red Bull career.
The Race
- Max Verstappen became a four-time world champion, joining Sebastian Vettel and Alain Prost.
- The Dutchman is the sixth driver in F1 history to win four or more world titles, following Juan-Manuel Fangio, Alain Prost, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel, and Lewis Hamilton.
- Verstappen joins Nelson Piquet (1981) and Keke Rosberg (1982) as drivers who secured the championship in Las Vegas.
- He claimed the title on a Saturday night for the second year in a row, following last year’s Sprint race in Qatar.
- Verstappen has led the drivers’ championship uninterrupted since May 22, 2022, the longest streak in F1 history.
- Red Bull has now scored points in 65 consecutive races, the second-longest streak in history (Ferrari holds the record with 83 consecutive races between 2010 and 2014).
- The 2024 season has already set multiple records, thanks to its competitive nature and extended calendar. It is the first in F1 history where four different constructors have achieved a one-two finish in a Grand Prix (Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren, and now Mercedes).
- It is also the first season where four constructors have each won at least four Grands Prix.
- Additionally, this is the first season where seven drivers have won multiple Grands Prix (at least two), with George Russell securing his latest win. Only Sergio Pérez is yet to win multiple races among the top teams.
- George Russell earned the third Grand Prix victory of his career.
- Mercedes recorded its 60th one-two finish in team history, the first since São Paulo 2022 (the Belgium one-two was voided due to Russell’s disqualification).
- Mercedes dominated every session in Las Vegas, from Free Practice 1 to the race itself—a well-deserved achievement.
- Lewis Hamilton remains seventh in the drivers’ standings, having never finished a season outside the top six.
- He has now finished on the podium at 36 different circuits, extending his own F1 record.
- Carlos Sainz secured third place for Ferrari, marking his third podium in the last four Grands Prix.
- Charles Leclerc finished fourth and is the driver who scored the most points in U.S. races this season, with 64 points.
- Lando Norris came sixth for the second consecutive race.
- Oscar Piastri finished seventh, matching Verstappen’s 16 consecutive points finishes. While consistently scoring points, he often finishes behind Norris.
- Nico Hülkenberg finished eighth, helping Haas reclaim sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship with a one-point lead over Alpine. It’s a tight battle!
- Yuki Tsunoda scored points for the second race in a row and the ninth time this season. Still not enough to replace Sergio Pérez next year?
- Sergio Pérez has scored just nine points across the last six Grands Prix.
- Guanyu Zhou finished 13th, his second-best result this season after an 11th place in Bahrain.
- Alex Albon (Williams) retired and has failed to see the checkered flag since Austin. No driver has more retirements this year (six).
- The race ran without a single yellow flag.
