Lando Norris welcomes criticism but draws the line at misinformation, calling out those who twist opinions into supposed facts in Formula 1.
Lando Norris has no issue with people expressing negative opinions about him. What frustrates the McLaren F1 driver, however, are those who present their opinions as facts, even going so far as to spread dubious theories and make false claims about someone.
“I’m absolutely fine with people having their own opinions and saying, ‘What if he had done this? Should he have done that?’” Norris said on the Fast and Curious podcast. “I respect all of that, and a lot of these people’s jobs are to comment on these things.”
“The only thing that isn’t respected is when people think they know better than others, when in reality, they probably don’t—because they weren’t in that situation, they weren’t living that moment.”
“And just outright false things. Things where you wonder, how on earth did someone come up with that? People don’t even call them conspiracy theories anymore—they call them facts. ‘Oh, it’s my personal fact.’ That’s not how it works, that’s not the definition of a fact.”
As a regular contender for victory, he experienced this firsthand in 2024. “You learn to deal with these things. And it’s something that probably affected me a lot more in the past. I think last year, I had to live with it and accept that people will either criticize or support you.”
However, that doesn’t bother him. In fact, he is open to criticism—whether from the media, his fans, his team, or even himself. Norris thrives on criticism and mistakes to move forward, even if he acknowledges that positive words have a greater uplifting effect.
“Of course, you’re always happier with those supporters. But I know I’m going to be criticized. I criticize myself all the time. I want my team to criticize me. And probably the thing I hate most in the world is people trying to make me feel good in the wrong way.”
“I prefer criticism over fake happiness, let’s say. That’s just how I do things… But I don’t care what people say, to be honest, because I’m the first to criticize myself. I’m also the first to be honest and say: ‘Yes, I did a good job today,’ or ‘I messed this up, or I didn’t do this well.’”
“I’ll always admit it, and I’ll always be honest about these things. That’s just life nowadays. People love to criticize, but again, turning that into something positive—where you want to prove them wrong and it pushes you to work a little harder—is the most important thing.”
