Krack Tempted by Audi F1, Commits to Aston Martin for Now

Krack Finds Audi F1 Move Rumours ‘Appealing’ but Stays Put

30/07/2024

Krack admits Audi F1 rumours are appealing, yet confirms his current commitment to Aston Martin.

For the second time, Aston Martin F1 team principal Mike Krack has skillfully sidestepped rumours that he is gearing up to leave the British outfit.

Amid recent turbulence in the leadership of Audi’s new F1 factory project, it has been suggested that the newly appointed Mattia Binotto might decide to focus more on the technical and day-to-day aspects and lure the Luxembourger to be the team director.

Interestingly, the rumours about Krack even predated the ousting of Andreas Seidl and Oliver Hoffmann, with suggestions that both wanted Krack despite their backstage disputes over the strategic approach.

Krack, aged 52, who has previously worked for another Volkswagen brand, Porsche, in the World Endurance Championship, was questioned twice about his ties with Sauber, owned by Audi, at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend.

He did not even deny having recently visited the team’s base in Hinwil, Switzerland, insisting he had “worked there for a long time” when it was owned by BMW and that he still has “many friends” there.

“At Aston Martin, I have the project of my life, where someone is investing heavily to become a major team and being part of it is an opportunity for everyone. So, I am focusing on this project. 2025 and 2026, that’s a huge challenge ahead of us.”

But Krack is not the master at Aston Martin F1; that is Lawrence Stroll. And if the big boss has been showing signs of disappointment lately, he could well make Krack a scapegoat.

So, when asked about the same rumours in another interview, Krack’s response seemed even less like a denial.

“Let’s keep our feet on the ground. It’s of course nice to be constantly at the centre of rumours, it’s pleasant to be in the discussions, but we must stay focused on the task at hand.”

“And that is clearly Aston Martin for me at the moment.”

The “for the moment” was, of course, accompanied by a smile…
