Formula 1 is under scrutiny by the US Department of Justice regarding its decision to reject Andretti’s entry into the sport, with plans to fully cooperate.

Official: F1 Owner Liberty Media to Undergo US Department of Justice Investigation Over Andretti Application Rejection

Liberty Media, the owner of Formula 1, is now the subject of a US Department of Justice (DoJ) investigation regarding its handling of Andretti’s failed bid to join the F1 grid.

Mario Andretti (pictured above) had engaged with US Congress members and senators, who were reportedly shocked by Liberty Media’s stance and called for an investigation in May.

The investigation is officially underway, and Liberty Media could face penalties under the US government’s antitrust laws.

Liberty Media’s CEO, Greg Maffei (pictured below), confirmed the news today during an F1 shareholders’ conference.

“There is an ongoing Justice Department investigation, and we intend to fully cooperate with this investigation, including any related information requests.”

“We believe that our decision, Formula 1’s decision, was in accordance with all applicable US antitrust laws, and we have previously detailed the rationale for this decision concerning Andretti,” stated Maffei.

However, Maffei reiterated F1’s openness to expanding the grid if circumstances allowed.

“We are certainly not opposed to the idea that expansion is inherently negative. There is an expansion methodology that requires approval from both the FIA and F1, and both groups need to find the criteria met (as was the case with the FIA for the Andretti submission).”

“We are certainly open to new entrants who make applications and could be approved if these requirements are met.”
