Red Bull Racing inducts two prodigies from a three-day trial in Jerez, intensively vetted by Helmut Marko.

Red Bull Racing has enrolled two new drivers into its driver academy following a joint trial in Jerez. Over three days of testing and evaluation, 11 competitors aged between 13 and 16 were assessed by Helmut Marko, the firm’s young driver consultant.

The selected candidates are Fionn McLaughlin, a 16-year-old Irish karting driver, and Swede Scott Lindblom. Marko paid close attention to how they adapted to single-seater cars.

“The key here is that we are seeing most of them in a Formula car for the first time,” Marko stated. “How they adapt, how quickly they progress, and how they improve over a two-day test.”

“We are looking for both talent and speed, a driver capable of winning a Grand Prix. We really focus on these drivers’ ability to withstand pressure and on qualifying simulations.”

The Austrian praised the establishment of a programme that is “the perfect preparation for Formula 1.” Highlighting Red Bull’s significant investment in its academy, he remarked, “we don’t buy stars, we create stars.”

McLaughlin outlined his goals after revealing that his main inspiration is Sebastian Vettel: “My goal in racing is to be a world champion. I never give up; I work hard until I am at the top. I will continue to work until I get there.”

Lindblom, who had never driven a single-seater before, admitted that this was his greatest challenge during the three days: “My biggest challenge was adapting my driving style from karting to F4, as it was the first time I was in an F4 car.”

However, Marko also praised Lindblom’s ability to be “immediately competitive.” The total number of drivers in the Red Bull Junior Team is now 11, with the potential for further additions.
