Imola’s F1 Future in Doubt as Global Push Intensifies

F1’s international expansion may spell the end for Imola, despite its key role during the pandemic. Tough choices lie ahead.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has delivered a sobering update about the future of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola — the seventh race on this year’s calendar, coming after Saudi Arabia and Miami.

Imola returned to Formula 1 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Domenicali was quick to praise the circuit and the city for stepping up when F1 needed them most.

“I’ll never forget that Imola answered the call during a very difficult time. When we had to find new venues, they reacted immediately, with energy and full support from the entire city.”

But times have changed.

As F1 continues to grow globally, Domenicali is receiving strong interest — and big financial offers — from new countries eager to host a race. That puts pressure on historic venues like Imola.

“We’ll soon have to make some tough choices. From a personal point of view, it won’t be easy. But I have a global role, and many emerging countries are ready to help grow the sport.”

“It’s a decision I’ll have to make soon — and it will be a final one.”

When asked directly whether Imola could continue alongside Monza, which is locked into the F1 calendar until 2031, Domenicali was honest.

“Italy has always been, and will always be, an important part of Formula 1. But having two races in one country is becoming harder to justify, especially as global interest in the sport keeps growing.”

“It’s unlikely we’ll be able to keep both Imola and Monza on the calendar for much longer.”

Domenicali was also asked about Lewis Hamilton’s tough start at Ferrari.

“Winning right away isn’t easy. But I believe in his drive and his ability to grow with the team. I’m optimistic. Still, it’s not a simple challenge.”

He also highlighted the dynamic between Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

“Leclerc is an incredible driver. He won’t want to miss the chance to prove he’s the stronger one. It’s a fantastic pairing — and it’s great for the entire world of Formula 1.”
