Hülkenberg Unfazed by Audi F1 Leadership Shift

Audi F1 Shakeup: Hülkenberg Cool Amid Changes

25/07/2024

Audi F1 sees major shifts, but Hülkenberg remains confident in the team’s new direction.

Nico Hülkenberg did not expect Audi F1 to part ways with Andreas Seidl and Oliver Hoffmann as the team announced Mattia Binotto’s arrival. However, the team’s future driver is fully confident in the new structure and the project’s progress.

“Of course, they were influential; they are the two guys we made the deal with,” stated Hulkenberg. “So, it’s like that. Clearly, it’s an unexpected change. But, obviously, I was informed on the day the group’s decision was announced by Gernot Dollner himself.”

“And, you know, it’s the group’s decision that it wants to change to move forward. I think that in big projects like this one, obviously in the leadership, there are people who are important pillars of these projects.”

“But they never rely on just one or two people. So, you know, in F1, everyone is somewhat changeable. And as for Mattia, I obviously know him from the past in the paddock, but I have never worked with him. But that will change in a few months.”

Despite these turnarounds, Hülkenberg remains as enthusiastic as ever about joining the project: “No, I’m not worried. It’s obvious that it’s been a bit of a wave, a bit of a shock. But now, obviously, it’s back to business.”

“I’m still eager to join this project and make it a success story with Audi. The fact that two people who were closely involved on my side are no longer there is perhaps a little sad. But I’m more interested in the project, that of joining Formula 1 with Audi and making it a success story.”

The fact that Audi is ready to make such significant decisions is reassuring for the German driver: “I think it shows that the CEO of Audi and everyone watching, is aware, is involved.”

“As you say, the fact that they’re taking steps means they’re very engaged and invested in this business and they’re getting their hands dirty. And that’s, I think, good and positive news, yes.”

Hülkenberg will drive for Stake F1 for a year, and he is not frustrated at the potentially challenging season ahead for 2025, as he sees the team working hard: “It’s obvious I see it every weekend because they are part of our group of teams and cars against which we compete.”

“And the line between hero and zero is very thin. And two-tenths can mean you have a very different, very good, or very bad weekend. I witness it every weekend. And I know that little things can have a very big impact and make a big change, a big difference.”

“So I am confident for next year, because I think that with more positive elements on their side and some things that I can bring and maybe change, we can turn things around as early as next year. I’m not saying a big step is needed, but just a few small steps in the midfield to be in the right place. I will stay positive. That’s all I have to say.”
