Every Day Counts for Sauber Ahead of Its Transformation into Audi F1

Hülkenberg: Sauber’s 2026 Audi Transformation Starts Now

Sauber prepares for its major 2026 transformation into Audi F1, with Hülkenberg confident in the team’s growing momentum and future success.

A Season of Change: These three words may be often used, but for Sauber, they truly capture the essence of what’s ahead. Starting next year, the green team will officially become Audi F1 with the arrival of the 2026 regulatory overhaul.

In the meantime, the team from Hinwil is making significant strides: they’ve even set up a new base in the UK to attract fresh engineering talent.

“Lots of new people have joined recently, especially in engineering, and we’re still recruiting heavily,” confirmed Nico Hülkenberg, the team’s lead driver, to the Formula 1 Management (FOM).

“I think all these new additions are creating a really positive atmosphere, a great environment, and a motivating vibe.”

Mattia Binotto is overseeing the expansion and formation of the new Audi F1 team from Switzerland.

From his position, Hülkenberg has had the chance to observe the work of his boss – who, even though he doesn’t visit the race circuits often, remains highly active at the factory.

“It’s really positive – very encouraging and productive,” Hülkenberg says about his growing relationship with Binotto.

“He seems genuinely involved. He regularly checks in – and vice versa – regarding the structural aspects of the team, how things are evolving. I communicate with him a lot, and so far, I really appreciate that.”

On race weekends, it’s Jonathan Wheatley, formerly of Red Bull, who takes the reins.

“Jonathan brings immense experience, deep knowledge, and a track record of success,” Hülkenberg remarks. “He’s come from one of the most successful teams in F1 history, so I’m sure he has a lot to offer – fresh ideas to implement here, helping the team and boosting performance.”

The Big Deadline for Audi F1

In less than a year, Sauber will switch to Audi engines and take on the name of its new owner.

But will the team be ready for 2026? Given Sauber’s current performance, is 2026 coming too soon, according to Hülkenberg? Should they already sacrifice the development of 2025 to focus all their efforts on the following year?

“It’s useful to have this year as a building block, to get to know everyone, integrate, and connect with the team and the project rather than arriving cold next year,” Hülkenberg explains.

“That being said, this is still a championship season, and we want to do a good job and make progress. We have to keep improving, especially with next year in mind, as the pressure will naturally increase with Audi coming on board as a factory team.”

“We’re laying the foundation and building the base for the years ahead, so honestly, every day and every step already matters a great deal.”

“I know the midfield is extremely tight and competitive – the margins are minimal, and every detail counts. I hope we can make our way into the midfield battle and cause a few headaches for other teams from time to time – that would be very satisfying. It will be a challenge, but that’s exactly why we’re here.”

How Does Nico Hülkenberg Feel as the Number 1 Driver of a Factory Team for the First Time?

“For me, I’m just enjoying my time here, and I really appreciate being part of this project. I love contributing, helping wherever I can. Beyond the racing and adrenaline, it’s another great aspect of this job that brings me a lot of satisfaction – being able to help the team with all my experience.”

“I think we just want to give it our all, together, and make sure this is a great adventure, a success. The more successful it is, the better, of course. I’m here for the work, for the enjoyment – the good days and the tough ones – so we’ll see what the future holds.”
