Nico Hülkenberg believes adaptability defines success in F1, comparing himself to Verstappen in how drivers handle evolving regulations, cars, and confidence.
Can an F1 driver perform better in a specific era of regulations than in another?
Yes, according to Nico Hülkenberg, the new Sauber/Audi F1 driver, who still considers himself a versatile racer.
However, the German does not believe that performance in Formula 1 depends solely on regulations or car generations. For him, it mainly comes down to feeling and confidence in the car.
“Take Max Verstappen. He adapts effortlessly to every situation. And I feel the same way about myself. I’ve never had difficulties with F1 cars since my debut.”
Does Hülkenberg think the current generation of F1 suits him better, given that he has excelled in mastering ground effect since his return?
“No, I don’t see it that way. I think it has more to do with how you feel as a driver and your confidence. Ultimately, it’s a matter of feeling in the car, or there simply isn’t any. If you’re missing even one percent somewhere, there’s an immediate problem. You can see it in the lap times, on the stopwatch.”
According to Hülkenberg, car feeling is crucial, but there are exceptions.
“There are drivers like Max. He always performs, regardless of the car generation, conditions, or regulations. In that sense, I am like him. Of course, I’ve had ups and downs, but that was more related to car philosophies. With Renault, it didn’t work out very well, but that was due to different circumstances. As I said, it’s more about feeling and where you find yourself at that moment.”
For the Sauber driver, adaptability is essential in Formula 1.
“Regulations and cars change every five or six years. As a driver, you have to adapt and relearn. Because if you’re only good with a certain type of car and you don’t evolve or adapt, your lifespan in Formula 1 is relatively short.”
