In 2026, Nico Hülkenberg will spearhead Audi F1’s fresh start, as the team embraces groundbreaking changes.
Nico Hülkenberg is eager to join Stake F1 in 2025, and he even believes that expectations for the team will reset in 2026 when it becomes Audi and Formula 1 adopts an entirely new Technical Regulation, both chassis and engine. However, he does not know what to expect.
“It’s hard to say,” Hülkenberg responded. “We are really starting from a blank slate. On one hand, I think it’s a good thing; it’s not a new team, but it will be labeled as a new team.”
“All the know-how and advantages of the current teams are somewhat erased, and the rules of the game are more equitable for everyone. So, it’s a good opportunity to be competitive right away, but the expectations are always to achieve success as quickly as possible.”
He explains what, in his opinion, prompted Audi to recruit him, and why he accepted: “I think they value my experience. Probably my judgment, my sense of car tuning, the way I push the team in development.”
“It’s clear that they have high ambitions. It’s a huge project with ambitions. Racing for a manufacturer, there are always a lot of expectations, naturally. But yes, they are pushing, just as the top teams do.”
The German finally comments on Audi’s complete takeover of Sauber, which was not initially planned: “It was their strategic decision—they thought it was what they needed to move forward and succeed in this project. For me, it was already convincing before.”
