Hülkenberg: Haas Poised to Retain Fifth After Races

10/07/2024

Following two successful races, Nico Hülkenberg believes Haas F1 is set to sustain their fifth-place standing.

Nico Hülkenberg acknowledged he was not entirely comfortable on track when rain first fell at Silverstone on Sunday. The Haas F1 driver, usually adept in such conditions, admits he feared pushing too hard and exceeding the limit.

“It’s quite uncomfortable to turn into Copse at 300 km/h with rain on the visor and not knowing whether I’ll hit the wall or manage the turn,” stated the German driver.

“Driving with slick tires and this level of grip is really deadly and challenging, and that’s why the race was quite tough and demanding in terms of concentration and mentality. But we managed the timing of the two stops well, hence the reward and the result.”

Haas secured two consecutive sixth places, and the German is pleased to see progress, both through the work done and the developments, to the point of competing to be the fifth force: “It’s obviously a nice and rewarding feeling to score eight points again, and to be sixth two times in a row.”

“It’s unexpected, but I think it’s deserved. We’ve worked for it. We stayed clean, error-free, with a good strategy. That’s very good. I think the best of all, however, is the performance we’ve had.”

“The evolution has really brought something to the car, and I honestly think we are in the fight to be the fifth fastest team now with sometimes Aston, sometimes Alpine, and sometimes others. I think we are there. We’ve been quite consistent this season and I think we can cling to that.”

Hülkenberg is pleased to see Haas returning to the midfield battle, whereas it was the last force last year, and even at the start of this year: “I mean, no one expected this, even when we started, it was better than what we expected.”

“But we have kept up with everyone and done the same work, maybe even better. I think it also depends a bit on the weekend and the track, so we will have to wait, but it’s definitely a remarkable comeback and a great story.”
