Lando Norris’s dedication has impressed McLaren’s Andrea Stella, with notable progress and readiness for a promising MCL38. The team and driver addressed past mistakes to ensure a stronger performance this season.
Andrea Stella is impressed by Lando Norris’s hard work since last year, particularly the progress the McLaren F1 driver has shown in recent months. The Woking team principal praises the solutions found by both the team and the driver to avoid repeating past mistakes.
“I think what Lando said about himself, ‘I am more ready to win races than ever before.’ I saw the work done during the winter, which started last year, by reviewing some sessions,” Stella said.
“There was a qualifying session in Mexico where we didn’t make it past Q1, and we pushed when it wasn’t necessary. The car was fast enough, so why did we push 100%?”
“All these little elements where you have a lot to learn, Lando and the team really studied them in depth, and we seized every opportunity to see how we could improve. I saw that the work was done at a high level and very committedly.”
“Lando wanted to make sure that if the car was good, he would be ready. During the winter, we kept telling Lando that the car was promising. I think that motivated him; he didn’t want to be left behind if the car was competitive, and he knew Oscar was preparing as well.”
Among the past mistakes that McLaren and Norris have not repeated is the one that cost the Briton victory at Sochi in 2021. But his team principal explains that it was mainly the team’s responsibility to avoid repeating the same errors.
“I think the team chose Russia more than Lando chose in that race because the call should have come from the team to change tires in Russia. It was our responsibility in that case; we learned our lesson and are moving forward.”
