Christian Horner insists Verstappen’s dominance cements his legacy as one of Formula 1’s all-time greats, driving at an extraordinary level.
Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal, believes Max Verstappen should be regarded as one of F1’s greatest drivers once he secures his fourth F1 title.
Following his remarkable climb from 17th on the grid to win the São Paulo Grand Prix, Verstappen now holds a 62-point lead over Lando Norris.
As a result, the Dutchman will secure his fourth consecutive crown in Las Vegas if he finishes ahead of Norris within the top four or if he concedes no more than two points outside.
Horner acknowledged that an “important” step was taken in Brazil toward Verstappen’s title defense.
When asked if Verstappen was special to F1, Horner replied, “Yes, absolutely.”
“If he continues like this, if he claims that fourth title—which, hopefully, is now just a small step forward for him—then he must be regarded as one of the sport’s greatest.”
“I think he’s driving at an incredible level, as he’s consistently demonstrated. It’s fantastic to work with him when he’s in the car; he gives you everything.”
“And he still has that hunger and passion, which is great to see.”
Verstappen’s performance in Brazil was so remarkable that the Red Bull boss compared it to Ayrton Senna’s “Lap of the Gods” at Donington Park in 1993—a comparison that faced criticism on social media.
“I think it was one of his best races. To go from 17th in those conditions to win the Grand Prix was exceptional.”
“So, that win ranks among his best, if not the best. When we talk about some of the best races we’ve seen over the years from some of the greatest names, Senna at Donington in ’93 came to mind. In my view, it was at that level.”
