Verstappen strives but falls short at Zandvoort, lacking the speed to secure victory.
Max Verstappen had certainly hoped for a more competitive outing when he emerged from the first corner leading at the Dutch Grand Prix. However, the Red Bull driver soon realised that Lando Norris was not going to relent, and that second place was the best possible outcome.
“We always try to do our best. We got off to a good start, we tried everything, but it was clear we weren’t fast enough to win the race, so I aimed to finish second today,” the three-time world champion conceded.
Verstappen thought he could take the lead at the start but knew he would be under threat from a McLaren that had already shown greater pace in qualifying. The Dutchman admits he focused on his driving, hoping to perform as well as possible.
“To be honest, I was confident because I knew we take good starts and I thought we would have another good one. I then ran my race, and it was worth a second place today.”
