Former F1 driver Alex Wurz considers FIA presidency bid as support grows, with Damon Hill’s endorsement and Ben Sulayem facing scrutiny.
Alex Wurz has not categorically denied his intention to run for the FIA presidency.
As we exclusively reported yesterday, the former Formula 1 driver could challenge the increasingly controversial Mohammed Ben Sulayem in the December elections, potentially joined by other candidates such as Carlos Sainz Sr. and David Richards.
1996 world champion Damon Hill supports the candidacies of both Sainz Sr. and Wurz, who is also co-director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association and a circuit designer.
“All of this came about because Damon Hill mentioned me in a tweet,” said Wurz, 51, in Monaco.
“I was talking about motorsport, and Damon responded. He simply asked his followers: ‘Next FIA president?’”
“Of course, it’s nice that Damon thinks I could take on the role of FIA president.”
Tellingly, Wurz did not deny the growing speculation.
“It was Damon who brought up the topic, not me. It’s something to consider. In any case, there’s been no official announcement.”
“For now, a third of my intellectual capacity is devoted to my work, a third to commentary, and the rest to my family.”
Recently, Susie, the wife of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, was also mentioned as a potential candidate to replace Ben Sulayem, but that possibility was reportedly dismissed due to a conflict of interest.
Regarding Wurz’s potential candidacy, Toto Wolff responded in Monaco: “Let’s wait and see who actually runs.”
“Alex has done everything in motorsport, he knows everyone, and he’s an expert.”
However, he added: “I don’t understand FIA politics well enough.”
