Red Bull’s decision to back rookie Lawson over Tsunoda raises questions. Could Tsunoda have challenged Verstappen’s dominance? Critics remain unconvinced.
Red Bull made a mistake by placing Liam Lawson alongside Max Verstappen in 2025, as they needed Yuki Tsunoda in that teammate role.
This is the warning from Johnny Herbert, former F1 driver and steward, who is convinced that Tsunoda would come closer to Verstappen’s level if they were teammates at Red Bull Racing.
After parting ways with Sergio Perez, instead of turning to Tsunoda, who has four seasons of F1 experience, Red Bull chose Lawson, who has only contested 11 Grands Prix.
“The one who impressed me the most between the two is clearly Yuki,” Herbert noted.
“I like his fire; he’s not afraid to speak up. I like his qualifying performances. His strength lies in his mental fortitude. He’s not afraid to criticize his team or the drivers around him. That’s the kind of mindset needed to challenge the best.”
“Would he beat Max? I’m not sure, but I think it would be close. That’s what Red Bull needed.”
“Marko says Lawson’s mental strength gives him the best chance of standing up to Max. But I’m not convinced at all.”
“Yes, Lawson, given his limited experience, has the greatest potential for growth. But can Red Bull afford the luxury of waiting while teams battle fiercely from the first race of 2025?”
