Mercedes F1 reveals the technical gap Hamilton’s exit will create, impacting their engineering team.
Lewis Hamilton has made significant contributions to Mercedes throughout his career, initially with McLaren and then with Mercedes F1.
However, the reverse is also true! The seven-time world champion won all his titles with the German brand, whether as an engine supplier or a manufacturer.
Undoubtedly a great driver, he will be missed by the Brackley team, as he is set to join Ferrari at the end of the season under a three-year contract.
Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes F1’s track engineering lead, has detailed what the team will miss following Lewis Hamilton’s departure.
“He will be missed as a personality, because he is a pleasure to work with.”
“His race pace is extremely good, but what he has brought to the team is incredible speed and a keen understanding of the car’s needs.”
“And he is very skilled at highlighting the car’s weaknesses. An excellent technician who guides the engineers.”
Besides “his excellent ability to assist in tuning a car,” Shovlin explained that it was difficult to determine exactly what the gap left by Hamilton’s move to Ferrari would mean for Mercedes’ engineering team.
“Yes, it’s hard to know now, from an engineering standpoint. Other than his innate sense of what the cars are doing, what the tyres are doing – and that’s very valuable when you incorporate it into the development process – it’s also several years of very close collaboration that will go with Lewis.”
