Late Strategy Shift Leaves Hamilton in Shock

28/07/2024

Hamilton expresses dismay at last-minute strategy change, unable to match Russell’s pace.

After his initial reactions to the F1 microphones at the finish, Lewis Hamilton was significantly more critical of his team’s strategy and baffled by how he missed out on victory at Spa, while his teammate, George Russell, switched strategies.

“Once again, congratulations to the team, congratulations to George. This will be a huge boost for everyone at the factory. We did not anticipate this weekend turning out the way it did, especially after Friday, when we were a second off the pace. We did an incredible job on Friday night, and securing a one-two finish before the summer break is quite spectacular.”

“I did not expect us to be as strong as we were. It was fantastic to take the lead but it was a bit of a shock at the end for me. We will enjoy this moment and move forward. And we can all head into the summer break with our heads held high and, hopefully, come back stronger in the second half.”

What does he mean by shock?

“The team keeps me informed about the strategies. And George wasn’t really in my race for the majority of it. If the strategy had been right on my side, he wouldn’t have been in my race at all.”

“I wasn’t informed soon enough about the strategy change, and thus the pace I needed to adopt on my side to go and fight for the victory. We wouldn’t have had this problem, but it’s great that in the end, we have cars that are competing.”

“That’s how it is. I’ll move forward even though I’m disappointed. I’m going to take my break and have a good time.”
