Hamilton Set for Ferrari Move Despite Mercedes Form

Shovlin Counters Russell on Hamilton’s Ferrari Shift

11/08/2024

Russell claims Hamilton’s Ferrari move wasn’t about Mercedes’ form.

George Russell stated in Belgium, during the last Grand Prix before F1’s summer break, that Lewis Hamilton probably would not have decided to move to Ferrari for 2025 if Mercedes had been as competitive at the end of last year as they are now (read here).

Indeed, Hamilton made his decision over the winter, before even the start of this season’s 2024 winter testing.

Mercedes F1’s track engineering director, Andrew Shovlin, isn’t so certain.

“I think if we had been winning championships recently, it would have been difficult for Lewis to leave, that’s true.”

“However, I believe his main reasons are not necessarily linked to the car’s performance. He clearly wants to start another chapter in his career beyond his very successful one with Mercedes.”

“He’s at an age where if he’s going to do it, he needs to do it sooner rather than later.”

Hamilton is now 39 years old, and his F1 career is reaching its final stages. Shovlin can understand the decision to race for a team as iconic as Ferrari.

The winner of 105 races now has a chance to end Ferrari’s long title drought, dating back to 2008.

“As I said, if we were dominating a championship, I think it would have been difficult for him to join Ferrari.”

“But I think a big part of Lewis wants to experience what it’s like with another team, another challenge in his career.”

“I think when someone decides to do that, it can be quite hard to persuade them otherwise.”
