Hamilton & Newey to Ferrari? Salo Sparks F1 Speculation

22/02/2024

Mika Salo, ex-Ferrari driver, hints at unseen aspects of Lewis Hamilton’s surprise 2025 move to Ferrari. He suggests Hamilton might have inside information influencing his decision to leave Mercedes.

Former Ferrari driver Mika Salo believes there’s more to uncover regarding Lewis Hamilton’s shocking transfer from Mercedes to Maranello for 2025.

Hamilton triggered an exit clause in his 2-year contract signed in the summer of 2023, surprising his boss Toto Wolff and the entire Formula 1 world with his upcoming move.

Salo, who made his own surprise debut for Ferrari in 1999 when Michael Schumacher broke his leg, suspects there are significant parts of the story the world does not yet know.

“I believe Hamilton knows something we don’t yet.”

“Whether it’s related to Ferrari’s development or team personnel is hard to say. However, there must be a reason he decided to change mid-contract. Given the current balance of power in F1, it makes no sense to change if he doesn’t have information on other developments.”

Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, simply claims that racing in red has always been his “childhood dream” – but Salo suspects other explosive news might be on the horizon.

“It’s difficult to assess how much Hamilton’s arrival will impact Ferrari. Success involves many more requirements than just the driver’s level.”

“There are many question marks around Red Bull’s situation right now, for instance, and there’s no other designer like Adrian Newey. There are increasingly strong and precise rumors in the Sakhir paddock about Newey’s arrival if Horner were to leave Red Bull. If Ferrari could also recruit him, I think they’d have a winning team again.”

Salo drove briefly for Ferrari during Schumacher’s era but says he was never phased by the particular pressure of representing the legendary brand.

“In my case, the media, fans, and all the fuss didn’t bother me. At least back then, there was good internal support for drivers to focus on driving and the rest of the staff to handle everything else, like media relations.”
