Hamilton Must Regain Edge Before Ferrari Move, Says Villeneuve

Villeneuve: Hamilton Has Lost His Killer Instinct on Track

25/10/2024

Former F1 champion Jacques Villeneuve questions Hamilton’s mindset, urging the Mercedes driver to rediscover his former competitive edge.

Jacques Villeneuve questions the future of Lewis Hamilton’s career with Ferrari. According to the former driver, the Mercedes F1 stalwart is no longer performing at his peak, and Villeneuve doesn’t believe this is simply due to Hamilton’s desire for a change of scenery.

“I don’t think Lewis is thinking about Ferrari,” Villeneuve asserts. “He’s thinking about himself and how things are unfolding for him. He’s really not in a good place right now, and that’s not helping his driving. He needs to break free from this mindset before considering Ferrari.”

The 1997 world champion wonders if Hamilton can reclaim his top form before joining Ferrari. “It’s challenging when you’re racing so consistently; there’s hardly time to make any changes.”

“But he’s just had a three-week break, and he hasn’t come back any stronger. I have no idea what’s going on in his mind, but he’ll be pleased Ferrari is a better car than Mercedes at the moment. He’s moving to a better car in that sense.”

“He should be happy, but generally, his behaviour doesn’t show the body language of a race winner. He’s no longer the killer competitor we saw in the past. He needs to rediscover his former form and attitude before switching teams, as Ferrari is not an easy team to be part of.”
