Vasseur: Hamilton’s 3-Year Ferrari Deal Confirmed

10/07/2024

Fred Vasseur confirms Lewis Hamilton’s three-year contract with Ferrari, aiming to attract top English engineers.

Ferrari Team Director, Fred Vasseur, revealed that Lewis Hamilton has signed a three-year contract to race for the team, not two years as speculated in February.

In February, Ferrari announced that Hamilton would join them on a “multi-year” contract starting next season. Vasseur has now confirmed the duration of this contract.

“He had to make a choice: ‘Where do I have the greatest chance of winning the world championship in 2025, 2026, and 2027?’ And he said: ‘Ferrari’,” Vasseur told the FT.

Hamilton reportedly wanted a three-year contract with Mercedes when he signed his previous contract with them last year, but Mercedes had refused.

Vasseur, who is also reportedly courting former Red Bull technical director Adrian Newey, further stated that he expects Hamilton’s presence to be “the best way to attract good people” to his team.

“We have good people at Ferrari, but I want to strengthen them. Lewis was an important symbol because he sends a positive message to the paddock about the future of the team.”

“Most F1 technicians are in the UK. If you move from Mercedes in Brackley to Red Bull in Milton Keynes, you keep the kids in the same school, you keep the same house. From Friday to Monday, you can change. Coming to Italy is a different story. You have to move the family; it’s a life change. Lewis’s transfer will help us convince.”
