Mansell: Age No Barrier for Hamilton’s Ferrari F1 Dream

05/02/2024

Nigel Mansell supports Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari move, disregarding age as a factor. With motivation high, Hamilton eyes an eighth F1 title, potentially marking a historic chapter in his illustrious career starting in 2025.

The 1992 Formula 1 World Champion, Nigel Mansell, believes age will not be a key factor in Lewis Hamilton’s pursuit of a record-breaking eighth title with Ferrari in 2025 and beyond… if he doesn’t secure it in 2024 with Mercedes F1.

Ferrari announced on Thursday that Hamilton had signed a multi-year contract with the Scuderia starting from the 2025 season, by which time he will be 40 years old.

Mansell, who was 39 when he won his long-awaited title with Williams, thinks motivation is more important than age in F1.

“People say Lewis is now too old. At 39, you’re not, I won my championship at 39 and could have continued, but politics intervened.”

“But Lewis, if motivated, has several, even many years left, I think it’s simply fantastic.”

Hamilton stated in 2021 he “honestly hoped not to be racing at 40,” but has since changed his stance.

His own performance against George Russell, Fernando Alonso’s performance at 42, and his desire for an 8th title motivate him to stay.

“Yes, Lewis can do it, but I’m sure Max [Verstappen] will do everything he can to stop him,” Mansell added.

Hamilton’s Ferrari Dream: A Historic Pursuit

“And I’m sure Ferrari next year will do everything it can to stop him at Mercedes. If it succeeds, it will be a good sign for him in 2025 anyway. He has two strategies for this 8th title in the end: if Mercedes wins this year, he completes the loop and takes on another challenge; if Ferrari wins, he’ll have the chance to get it next year.”

“So, I think we’re in for an excellent Formula 1 season, and it certainly seems like we’ll have an exciting one in 2025.”

In 2025, Hamilton will become the first Englishman to drive for Ferrari since Mansell joined the Scuderia in 1989.

Mansell immediately endeared himself to the Tifosi by winning the opening race of the 1989 season after McLaren dominated the previous year, and similar performances earned him the nickname “Il Leone” (The Lion).

Regarding Hamilton, Mansell believes Ferrari has made “a dream transfer.”

“I think it’s fantastic for the fans and incredibly dynamic. For Lewis, who will probably continue and finish his career at Ferrari, it’s like a dream come true for him, I imagine, because going to Ferrari is what every driver dreams of.”
