Lewis Hamilton remains determined to adapt with Ferrari, aiming for a breakthrough, despite media pressure and ongoing performance struggles.
Hamilton is working hard to break free from a challenging run of races with Ferrari.
While he secured a Sprint win in China, the British driver has struggled to match the performance of teammate Charles Leclerc. That said, there have been moments where both Hamilton and the car have shown promising competitiveness. So, why hasn’t the breakthrough happened yet?
“There’s a lot going on. A lot of different things. It’s not just one particular factor,” Hamilton explains.
After his extensive work at Ferrari’s factory following the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, does he think that’s the turning point?
“Not really. When I first joined Mercedes, the first six months were tough, getting used to working with new people. Obviously, the engineers I’m working with now are used to setting up the car for a different driver and driving style. I’m also used to driving a car with a different setup. So, it’s a combination of factors,” Hamilton reflects.
“However, we did spend some productive time in Italy, reviewing a lot of things, working hard in the simulator, and making some adjustments. We’ll see how it works out this weekend.”
Will things improve by the summer?
“Six months? Honestly, I’m not sure. We’re doing everything we can to speed up the process, but it could take longer. Who knows?”
When it comes to driving the car instinctively, does he feel at ease or does he need to consciously think through his actions?
“It’s always a mix of both, but I’m working hard to adapt to this car, that’s for sure.”
Hamilton’s competitiveness has sparked a lot of media discussion. Although he admits to seeing the comments, he adds, “I don’t really focus on them. I try not to get caught up in the opinions of people who have no idea what’s actually going on, especially from those who’ve never been in my position. So, I keep a low profile and focus on continuing to enjoy the work I’m doing with my colleagues.”
And what about this weekend in Miami? What can we expect from him and Ferrari?
“No idea. We’ll do our best. There are no upgrades or anything for this weekend, but we’ll keep working to optimize the car. Of course, Charles did an amazing job in the last race and showed what the car is capable of in the race. Our goal is to try to replicate that.”
