Lewis Hamilton calls for more driver involvement in FIA decisions, aiming to improve collaboration and communication within Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton has called for Formula 1 drivers to have a seat at the table with the FIA, aiming to improve collaboration and communication with the governing body.
Earlier this week, FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced plans to revise Appendix B of the International Sporting Code, which covers controversial rules on offensive language.
Communication has been a significant issue between the GPDA (Grand Prix Drivers’ Association) and the FIA throughout Ben Sulayem’s tenure. In recent years, drivers have often resorted to sending open letters to the FIA instead of holding face-to-face meetings.
Hamilton is determined to change this dynamic, stressing the need for a better working relationship, including direct involvement in FIA meetings.
“I think, in the end, the GPDA is very united. Ultimately, we want to work closely with the FIA,” Hamilton said in Miami.
“We all want the sport to continue growing and improving. And of course, communication has been a real challenge over time. Ultimately, we have no decision-making power at the FIA, and that needs to change, in my opinion.”
“If you look at other sports with unions, that might be something that comes into play at some point. But as I said, we don’t want to control things. We just want to collaborate more and make our voices heard.”
“At the end of the day, those making decisions on behalf of others have never been in that position themselves. It’s important to have the driver’s perspective, and that’s all we’re trying to offer them.”
