Lewis Hamilton honours Ayrton Senna by driving the triple world champion’s McLaren.

Following in the footsteps of Sebastian Vettel at Imola (also present this weekend in Brazil), Lewis Hamilton paid a touching tribute to Ayrton Senna, 30 years after the legendary driver’s tragic accident.

The seven-time world champion, a devoted admirer of “Magic Senna” and an honorary citizen of Brazil, seized the moment to take a few laps in Senna’s iconic 1990 McLaren.

Originally scheduled for Saturday, the tribute was postponed to Sunday due to weather conditions. Despite a disappointing qualifying session that saw him eliminated in Q1, the future Ferrari driver rose to the occasion, delivering a memorable spectacle for the crowd at Interlagos, in front of Senna’s family.

Waving the Brazilian flag on his final lap, Hamilton later took a moment to admire his idol’s helmet, brought to the track by Senna’s sister, before stepping out of the McLaren to give an emotional interview.

In 1990, Senna clinched the drivers’ world championship behind the wheel of this McLaren, one of the most iconic cars in Formula 1 history.

Today, 34 years on, Hamilton will step into this remarkable vehicle for a special demonstration.
