Hamilton and Gasly voice strong opposition to the idea of introducing specific transfer windows in Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton has hinted that he is against changes to the structure of Formula 1’s driver market to maintain “chaos” throughout the season.
The current driver market has already seen various movements, with Hamilton moving to Ferrari and Nico Hulkenberg to Stake / Audi for next year.
Further movements are expected to be announced in the coming weeks and months, without a fixed schedule in F1 unlike other sports, where deals must be completed within a certain timeframe.
As the first driver this year to confirm his plans for 2025, the seven-time world champion expressed his excitement to see how the rest of the grid would fill up.
“Is this a novelty or a proposal?” Hamilton said to the media when the prospect of introducing a transfer window was raised.
“I haven’t thought about it. I think it’s really exciting in other sports like the NFL, for example.”
“But I think it’s already quite exciting now. No one knows who is going where, obviously, little by little, you see it drip throughout the season.”
“When you have drivers moving, it causes a bit of chaos and it’s good to have chaos throughout the season, right?”
“I saw the other day that there are still many seats not yet taken. It’s quite an exciting time. For us, the drivers, it’s always nice to chat even though I haven’t changed teams much in my career. We are lucky, we feel very fortunate to have something signed when it happens.”
“It really allows you to plan your future and really channel your energy. But it’s exciting for us to see now where everyone is moving so I’m rather against this idea.”
Alongside him, Pierre Gasly supported Lewis Hamilton’s comments while his team, Alpine F1, confirmed earlier this week that Esteban Ocon would leave the team at the end of the year.
“I think we are living through a quite exciting time right now, given the way things are going and since the start of the year, I think you [the media] have talked a lot about it and kept everyone very busy.”
“I think it’s fun like this. We don’t need to copy everything other sports do.”
“It’s always been this way in F1 and I think it works well this way.”
