Hulkenberg’s 8th Place Pushes Haas Ahead in Tight Battle

21/10/2024

Nico Hulkenberg’s impressive 8th place in Austin helped Haas F1 secure a critical lead over rivals RB F1 in the standings.

Nico Hulkenberg further improved Haas F1’s score, with his 8th place finish proving crucial in Austin as Liam Lawson and his RB F1 were right behind.

The American team has now taken the lead at home in the Constructors’ Championship over its Italian rival. With a 38 to 36 point advantage, the battle for 6th place will be fierce until the end of the season.

“I’m very happy with that; we maximized what was possible, and by the end, we were closing in on Perez in his Red Bull. I had the feeling it would be a one-stop race, and that turned out to be the case, although halfway through the first stint, it felt really bad and awful. The tires came back to life, and going long opened the door to this result. That was the key, so two points this weekend—yesterday and today—and a two-point lead over RB F1. It was a good weekend.”

Kevin Magnussen was brief at the finish: “We didn’t score points today, even though we had a good chance. We talked about a one-stop strategy, but we couldn’t pull it off with my car. We’ll need to understand why.”

Ayao Komatsu, the team’s director, noted that “it was a somewhat mixed result, but it was great to secure 8th place with Nico. He executed a very good one-stop strategy, and given the circumstances, he managed the tires well and communicated effectively with the team.”

“On Kevin’s side, it was almost the opposite, as our base strategy was a two-stop, but there were communication issues towards the end of the race. I believe we should have scored points with both cars today, even though Kevin struggled to stay with the right group for 10th place, but at least he would have had a chance.”

“If we had left here with 8th and 10th places, it would have been the best outcome, but unfortunately, only Nico scored today. We collected seven points this weekend, and with a two-point lead over RB F1, it’s still a positive result.”

“We are now sixth in the Constructors’ Championship with five races remaining, and we’re competitive, so we’re aiming for more.”
