Haas F1's Q3 Dreams Dashed in Challenging Pitlane

Haas F1 deserved Q3, according to Hulkenberg and Magnussen

20/07/2024

Haas F1’s Q3 hopes were hindered by tough pitlane conditions, say Hulkenberg and Magnussen.

Nico Hulkenberg narrowly missed Q3 by a mere 10 milliseconds at the Hungarian Grand Prix, edged out by Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes F1.

The German driver from Haas F1 once again demonstrated the versatility of the VF-24, which performed commendably at the Hungaroring, especially since he managed to progress to Q2 on worn tyres alone.

“We were forced to wait our turn, weaving through the queue in the pit lane which isn’t ideal! This rule again compromised our chances. But getting the timing right is always a challenge, and today it was too close for comfort.”

“Nonetheless, we crossed the line before the chequered flag and completed our lap, but it was certainly tough. It wasn’t the pace that let me down, it was the fact I was only on worn tyres from Q2; we had already used them in Q1 but without that, I would have comfortably made it through.”

Kevin Magnussen, finishing 15th and last in Q2, also expressed frustration.

“I believe we had a car for Q3. We just happened to be the last car out of the pit lane and with all the spacing issues, I ran out of time and had to push as if it was my qualifying lap, so by the time you get there, you’ve already done a lap that wears out the tyres.”

“We lost a lot of time per lap because of this, and we were only two-tenths away from Q3, so that’s what cost us dearly, I think. Since FP2, we’ve been very quick, so it’s frustrating that we couldn’t make it to Q3 with the pace we believe we had.”
