Haas F1 refuses to abandon its 2025 car, with Komatsu stressing the importance of development despite looming 2026 regulation changes and financial stakes.
Haas F1 Won’t Rush to Abandon Its 2025 Car for the 2026 Development
Ayao Komatsu, the team’s director, explains that even for a midfield team, there is no benefit in hastily shifting all resources to the next project.
“It would be quite sudden before even starting the first race,” Komatsu cautions. “But the fact is, we can’t do that anyway. If we find ourselves in this position, we need to improve this car’s development to try and catch up. We are not in a position where we can simply abandon 2025.”
Komatsu revealed that finishing last in 2025 would cost more than the potential gains from focusing heavily on next year’s rule changes, making it worthwhile to push the VF-25’s development further.
“If we finish last this year, the amount of money we lose is obviously unacceptable. It’s very simple—we have several different scenarios depending on our position, which I share with the owner.”
That doesn’t mean Haas hasn’t started working on the new regulations: “For now, the simplest way to put it is that we are still focused on 2025. Of course, we are dealing with 2026, but we remain focused on 2025.”
