Lando Norris: Racing Beyond Speed for Life’s Joy

16/01/2024

Lando Norris, a driver for McLaren, shared his perspective on life and reflected on missed opportunities in 2023 during an interview with The Athletic. For Norris, racing is more than just speed and competition; the British driver sees it as a way to experience freedom and have complete control over the moment.

The young driver remains humble about his success. “I’m just a normal guy who drives cars and wants to enjoy life,” he says. “No matter the circumstances, wherever I am in the world, or whatever I’m doing, I just want to spend time with my friends, have fun, laugh, and create memories,” he adds.

For Norris, motorsport is more than a professional career. It’s a way to feel free. “It’s about speed, it’s competitive. You just feel free. It feels like there’s no limit. The limit is yourself, and there aren’t many other things in life where this is the case. You just drive fast and have everything under control. I like having complete control over what happens,” explains the McLaren driver.

Lando Norris: Racing, Life, and Reflections

Reflecting on the Qatar Grand Prix, where he believes he missed a potential victory, Lando Norris looks back honestly. “I don’t know how much faster Max (Verstappen) could have gone in the qualifiers. But if I’m honest with myself, I think I should have been fighting for two pole positions that weekend. And possibly two victories,” he reveals.

He acknowledges his mistakes and the frustration that stemmed from them. “It’s a big thing to say, but I think if things had gone well, if I just had done better and not made the mistakes I made that weekend. That was the reason I was so frustrated because I knew what was at stake, what we could potentially achieve,” says Norris.

For the British driver, his life goals are clear. “I feel like sometimes people take life too seriously. You only have one life. I think we’re lucky that sometimes we can just do what we love, and I’m one of those people who can do what I love and at the same time call it a job,” says Norris. “I just want to have fun. There’s only one life, so enjoy it and make memories.”
