Antonelli’s F1 start ends in a crash at Monza, severely damaging teammate George Russell’s Mercedes.
Mercedes F1 protege Andrea Kimi Antonelli experienced a significant crash early in Free Practice 1 during his official debut at the Italian Grand Prix (see video and other photos below).
10 minutes into Free Practice 1, replacing George Russell, Antonelli, who was fourth in the standings, lost control of the W15 in the Parabolica, entering far too quickly. This sent him sideways into the tire barrier after traversing the short gravel trap.
He exited the car unaided, with Antonelli taken to the medical center as per normal procedure.
Antonelli apologized to the team for the crash, prompting a rare radio intervention from Toto Wolff to reassure the 18-year-old, emphasizing that “all is well, Kimi”.
Antonelli is tipped to replace Lewis Hamilton, who is moving to Ferrari in 2025, with the Briton having set the fastest time before the red flag was deployed for the accident.
An announcement was expected today or tomorrow, but this crash might disrupt the timing of Mercedes F1’s communication, especially as Toto Wolff is among the three team bosses summoned to the traditional team principals’ press conference on Friday at 3:30 PM.
