George Russell urges F1 stewards to apply consistency and common sense, citing frustrations over recent penalty inconsistencies.
George Russell refuses to heavily criticise the race stewards after the questionable decisions made in Austin. The Mercedes F1 driver acknowledges that the stewards face a challenging task, even as he himself was penalised for pushing Valtteri Bottas off the track.
“I think the stewards have a very difficult job because the regulations are extremely broad,” said Russell. “For my penalty with Valtteri, the rules state that if you are not ahead at the apex and force someone off, you get a penalty. So, according to the letter of the law, my penalty was correct. But everyone who understands racing, and everyone watching, knows it wasn’t the right call.”
The Briton is frustrated by the inconsistency of the decisions and believes the FIA should have year-round stewards to improve consistency.
“I’m not sure how we move forward. I think we would all like to see the same stewards throughout the season, so that drivers and stewards are on the same page. We can then apply common sense when necessary, rather than strictly following the rulebook.”
