Alpine F1 faces a critical call to action amid internal strife and missed opportunities in recent races.
Esteban Ocon secured a point at Spa-Francorchamps during the Belgian Grand Prix. Starting ninth on the grid, the Alpine F1 driver is nonetheless convinced he could have performed better had the team managed the race strategy more effectively, as he shared with Canal+.
“I think we had good speed, which is positive. This is a circuit where we’re always quicker, and I’m a bit disappointed to only score one point. Before the second stop, I was eight seconds ahead of Fernando so we could have scored more points. It’s a missed opportunity, it’s regrettable not to maximise the result,” Ocon expressed, noting that his summer break has not yet begun.
“It’s not holiday time yet, we have two days of testing on Tuesday and Wednesday. We’ve got some work to do before we can rest and prepare for the second half of the season. It’s a good race to end the first half of the season; we must remember that we were at the back of the grid in Bahrain, so it was a decent race.”
Pierre Gasly was far more critical of his team this Sunday, as he faced multiple issues with his A524. The French driver lambasted the car’s operational handling, performance, reliability, and strategy.
“It was very disappointing, we’re losing seven tenths on the straights each lap. There are far too many issues, the steering wasn’t straight, we were stopped on the straights with engine temperature problems,” Gasly stated, also criticising the team’s operations.
“We made two pit stops… there are far too many mistakes, and that’s been the case over the last three weekends, and we need to pull ourselves together during the summer break. It was a very challenging start to the season, we scored around ten points and we need to do better.”
Gasly does not plan to rest this summer, as he wants to see progress from Alpine at the end of the season: “We can’t completely disconnect; there’s a lot that needs improving, so we need to discuss together to resolve these issues.”
