Pierre Gasly’s impressive fifth-place finish boosts Alpine’s position, overtaking Haas in a dramatic and fiercely contested Qatar Grand Prix.
Pierre Gasly secured an impressive fifth place at the Qatar Grand Prix after a challenging and eventful race. The Alpine F1 driver celebrated an unexpected result, achieved thanks to a strong-performing A524.
“It was an incredible race; I’m very happy. The car performed well. We managed things well—I didn’t get off to a great start and lost some positions, but I tried to stay calm in the car. I felt good, focused on managing the tires, and managed to overtake Yuki and Alonso,” Gasly said.
“I felt faster than Magnussen, so I saved the tires to attack when he pitted. It’s very positive—we made changes that helped compared to the Sprint. At the restart, we were sixth, things happened up front, and it got intense keeping Carlos behind. I had to defend hard, so I’m very pleased.”
“It wasn’t easy because I had to save fuel, so there were a lot of things to manage. But what stands out is the performance—we’re very fast. We’ve shown it in recent races, like in Vegas when we started third, and we know these points will be crucial.”
The Frenchman locked up his wheels during the restart after one of the Safety Cars, and he explained the incident: “What happened is that Pérez spun, and I almost ran into him because he was reversing. I didn’t take any risks, went off track, and picked up some dust.”
“I thought the grip would be fine at the restart two corners later, but I locked up both front tires and got a scare because I couldn’t stop the car. I went far off track. After that, I got back ahead of Sainz and managed to stay there. But we had a lot of vibrations, and it was quite tricky to handle.”
Nonetheless, this strong performance is somewhat overshadowed by rumors surrounding a possible dismissal of Esteban Ocon before Abu Dhabi, reportedly being orchestrated by Flavio Briatore.
