Gasly blames Tsunoda as Monaco crash ends F1 race

Pierre Gasly pointed at Yuki Tsunoda for their Monaco GP crash, denying brake failure and defending Alpine after the F1 race incident.

Pierre Gasly retired following contact with Yuki Tsunoda at the tunnel exit early in the Monaco race. Despite a statement from Alpine F1 blaming brake failure, the driver rejected that theory and explained the cause of the incident.

“There was no brake failure; I lost them only after we made contact. Since Yuki made a mistake at the corner before the tunnel, I was close behind him. He started braking on the left, and I wasn’t expecting him to come back to the right,” Gasly stated.

“Every lap, he ended up on the right. This time, he braked on the left, so I moved to the right, but he was slower and closed the door. Once I was boxed in, there was nothing I could do, and I didn’t expect that. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll need to quickly shift focus to next week.”

The Frenchman explained his decision to bring the car back to the pits on three working wheels: “For me, that was the best thing to do. We’ll talk about it again. I knew I could come back safely at low speed, and I couldn’t just stop. These are the choices we make, and that’s the one I made.”

Franco Colapinto gave a disappointing assessment of the weekend, after qualifying in last place and starting from the ninth row alongside Gasly: “Starting from 20th, it was difficult to aim for points. P13 was the best we could do.”

“We started on the wrong tyre, tried to extend the stint, and eventually switched to a quicker stop for mediums. The race was tough, but we’ve got things to work on for the next one.”

“It was a difficult weekend. The low-speed balance was far from where it needed to be, and we couldn’t get the car to work in certain areas. We were way off in qualifying. It’s far from ideal to have both cars out in Q1.”
