Russell reflects on maturity, leadership, and embracing a pivotal career shift as he prepares for a decisive season at Mercedes.
George Russell is set to begin his seventh season in Formula 1. After three years with Williams, he has spent another three alongside Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes F1. This year, he will step into the role of team leader with a new teammate and understands this is a natural progression.
“I recognize my role as a more experienced driver,” Russell stated. “There are many excellent young drivers coming onto the grid, and it makes you realize you’re no longer a youngster. I’m entering a new chapter in my career. I’m finishing my early years and moving into the intermediate phase.”
“Lewis was 29 when he joined Mercedes and began winning all those championships, and Michael was in his 30s at Ferrari. These days, everyone starts younger and younger.”
“I made my debut at 20. But I feel ready now to take on responsibilities within the team, though the most important thing is to drive as fast as possible, and I feel well-positioned to do so.”
“I will keep wanting to learn, stay open, and take nothing for granted. You either have the speed, or you don’t, but there’s no doubt the new guys coming in will be competitive.”
Among those young drivers is his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who is highly regarded—a view Russell shares: “He’s a fantastic driver. He doesn’t have the experience yet, but I’m sure he’ll be up to speed quickly.”
“He’s already fitting in very well. We’ve both raced since we were young, and we know what input is important for the team. He’s young, but his opinions will be just as valuable.”
However, the team’s reserve driver will not be a young prospect but Valtteri Bottas, whose strengths Russell acknowledges: “His experience will be crucial. Having someone who knows the simulators, the racing, and the team inside out will be amazing.”
“Listening to his experiences in recent years at Sauber, with the Ferrari engine, could also be a key element. You always have to stay open-minded about what others are doing, and he brings all of that with him.”
“Obviously, a few years ago, we weren’t seen as having a strong relationship, but we’re both professionals, and our relationship has grown. We often travel together and run into each other at the hotel or gym.”
The Finn sports a mullet, and Russell jokes about their contrasting hairstyles: “Maybe he could give me some of his hair from the back, and I could give him some of mine from the sides—I think we could create something pretty extraordinary with the two!”
Within Mercedes, Russell will also support Doriane Pin, who represents the team in F1 Academy: “The F1 Academy belongs in the F1 support program; it shouldn’t be anywhere else. Doriane has made a great start and had an excellent season last year. It will be exciting to see her again and closely follow her performances.”
