McLaren’s F1 Home Hit Again: Fire, Now Water!

19/07/2024

After surviving a fire, the McLaren F1 team’s motorhome faces a new ordeal—water damage.

The latest incident to strike the McLaren motorhome at the Hungarian Grand Prix will not cause any issues for the drivers this weekend, Oscar Piastri has stated.

The upper floor of the “McLaren Team Hub” was damaged when a storm hit the Hungaroring on Wednesday as teams were setting up their installations before this weekend’s race. Flooding resulted from a severe storm in the paddock and pit lane, with 20 centimeters of water in places.

By Thursday, almost everything was back to normal and the rest of the weekend should proceed normally on the track side. The same goes for the 20 drivers, who have their own private facilities in these motorhomes. With hot conditions forecast for this weekend’s race, Piastri stated that the most important thing was that their rooms were not affected.

“We have two smaller rooms. So the ones downstairs – and especially the one with air conditioning – are OK. So for this weekend, we are fine. The one upstairs, I can’t use. But I have one, so it will be okay.”

This is the second time in four race weekends that McLaren has suffered a mishap with its hospitality. The team had to evacuate its facilities during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend when a fire broke out just before the final practice session on Saturday.

With part of the Team Hub out of service, McLaren had to rearrange the available premises and borrow spaces offered by rival teams and the Circuit of Catalunya. Piastri said they did the same this weekend.

“It doesn’t change much. Unfortunately, we have the experience of having to rearrange things a bit, especially for the team and guests. But everything will be fine for the weekend. Everyone is supportive.”

“I don’t know if this motorhome we now have is a bad omen and just, I don’t know if it’s a sign that we need a new one or anything, but everything will be fine.”

“Last time – our motorhome caught fire – and Lando put our F1 on pole, so I don’t know, maybe it’s good!”
